Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
