The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have come together throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the war to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, described.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated additional dead people had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south, medics stated.
