Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections from Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city during next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations and City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit rainbow flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Legal Background of Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position on Symbols
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums on matchdays. While its rules forbid political signage with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of championing equality.
- A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
- Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the city throughout the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our region,” organizers concluded.
