A significant manufacturing zone located on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with radioactive contamination following an official team detected traces of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 production facilities inside the area, which includes businesses shipping frozen seafood.

Emergency Measures and Product Recall

This discovery has triggered emergency decontamination operations and the moving of nearby residents, following a comparable contamination scare in the US that was linked to the Jakarta facilities.

A major international store chain is one of the businesses that have withdrawn products from its stores after the discovery.

Probe and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled coated prawns sent by a local firm.

Officials issued an advisory advising suppliers and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, although the detected amount was far below the agency's intervention limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate risk to the public.

The authority stated: “The primary impact on health of concern after extended, repeated low dose contact (eg through consumption of polluted products or water over time) is an increased chance of the disease, caused by damage to DNA within body cells.”

Extensive Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were affected. The official taskforce did not identify the 21 other manufacturing sites, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy authority.

A senior official stated that people residing in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “top priority”.

Medical officials additionally performed checks on local employees and residents located near the manufacturing zone, identifying 9 people who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a hospital before being cleared to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Plans
