Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
