US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
