Chicago's MLB Team Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Agreement.

In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17M for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minors without his approval and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.

Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, bolsters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.

A two-time league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 home runs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was limited to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with recording often, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that brought home teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a game-tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The power hitter is set to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
