A massive Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs locations across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the business owner, a familiar bidder at the yearly January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "astonished at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This new acquisition tops his previous historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record yet again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for customers at the winner's sushi restaurants soon after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied diner.
